RAF Waddington International Air Show proved to be a huge success. With high numbers the early surge in traffic was heavier than expected, we have worked closely with the Lincolnshire Police and the Traffic Management Company to minimise disruption and maximise traffic flow.

With a huge variety of aircraft filling the skies above RAF Waddington over the 2 days, it was difficult for anyone to pick a favourite display. From the roaring Thunderbirds to the might of the Vulcan there was something for all of the 145 000 visitors.

A flypast by Waddington-based Sentry, of 8 Squadron provided the curtain-raiser to this year’s spectacular air show, the 16th to be held at the Lincolnshire airbase. Also thrilling the crowds was the familiar Avro Lancaster bomber escorted by a Spitfire and Hurricane from the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

In total the air show included over 7 hours of flying displays and 55 static display aircraft Among the aerobatic teams displaying was the RAF’s own Red Arrows, and the UK’s only full-time civilian aerobatic team: the Blades. The Thunderbirds in their F-16 Fighting Falcons attended the RAF Waddington Air Show for the first time in more than 10 years and their only 2011 UK appearance.

But it was the eagerly-awaited appearance of the Vulcan on both days of the air show which saw the crowds fall silent in awe during the exciting and nostalgic 10-minute flying display.

Group Captain Chris Jones, Station Commander at RAF Waddington, said: “I am absolutely thrilled with the success of this year’s show. Given our ongoing operational commitments, I am immensely proud that RAF Waddington personnel have been able to mount such a spectacular show this year, and I am grateful for all the hard work that has gone in to making the event a resounding success.

He continued:

Thanks to superb assistance from the local emergency services and the local authorities, we have been able to hold a wonderful event, allowing us to showcase the RAF’s capabilities to families and aviation enthusiasts alike. I hope everyone has an enjoyable and memorable day at RAF Waddington,

New to the air show this year was the RAF on Air experience, a 20ft x 9ft screen showcasing the RAF at its best, at home and on operations. Carol Vorderman took the helm hosting interviews with Flt Lt Kirsty Moore, the first female Red Arrows pilot and Myles Garland, ex RAF Red Arrows and now the Blades Leader. Another new techno innovation was the introduction of a smart phone app where visitors could scan bar codes next to stationary aircraft for info and stats.

Recently retired from the RAF, the 2011 RAF Waddington Air Show was the first for Mr Paul Sall, in his position as Air Show Director, It has been a steep learning curve, this year, but I am very pleased with how the Air Show has gone. There is a great sense of achievement for everyone on the Air Show Team to see so many visitors enjoying the ground displays, big screen and the flying displays and I’m really looking forward to building on our successes next year.

All the proceeds from the RAF Waddington Air Show are donated to the RAF Association (RAFA) and the RAF Benevolent Fund (RAFBF). Some £2.6 million has been raised since the first air show 1995 and although this year’s final total is still being calculated, it is likely that as well as some £100,000will be raised for RAFA and RAFBF charities, RAF Waddington will also benefit with a charity pot of about £20,000 for local causes.

RAF Waddington looks forward to throwing open their gates and welcoming the public again next year for the 2012 Air Show on 30 June – 1 July.

NATO Tiger meet 2011 from 09 May – 20 May 2011 is at Cambrai Air Base in the Northern part of France with host unit: Escadron de Chasse 01.012.

This tiger meet was to be the biggest tiger meet ever. Because of the 50th anniversary of the tiger meet but unfortunately recent world events have lead to the cancellation of various participants, some even in the last days before the start. But there is still an interesting list of aircraft.

On a typical Tiger Meet flying program you will find missions like: range firing, air-to-air, low level nav and COMAO missions… all of them with briefings and debriefings. Due to the growing helicopter force within the Tigers they are intigrated within the mission as Forward Air Controllers or in a CSAR role. Besides their work within the COMAO’s the helicopter force ofter practices with local army (special) forces.

11 February 2011

People planning to attend the Air Tattoo’s 40th anniversary celebrations in July have until the end of February to get their hands on special Earlybird tickets, organisers warn.

From March 1, day-specific tickets for the world-famous airshow, on July 16-17, will cost £39 plus a £4 booking fee for orders taken online or over the telephone. However, the Earlybird price is just £34, representing a saving of up to £9 per ticket. All accompanied under-16s get in free of charge.

Air Tattoo organisers are planning a range of breath-taking set pieces both in the air and on the ground at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire to mark 40 years of staging world-class airshows. The first Air Tattoo was held at North Weald airfield in 1971 and has since grown to become one of the UK’s biggest outdoor public events. It is staged annually in support of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust.

This summer, more than 150,000 people are expected to attend the airshow to see many of the world’s most exciting aircraft, including fast jets, giant transporters, classic warbirds, helicopters and aerobatics display teams. In addition to the thrilling seven-hour flying programme, there is a large static aircraft park, a classic car display, an action arena, fairground and outdoor concert. Entertainment includes a stunt car driving demo, a parachute tower, children’s quad bikes, a motorbike display team, water zorbing, re-enactors plus a range of aircraft simulators.

Air Tattoo Deputy Director of Marketing Helen Webb said that as most people are having to tighten their belts it was important to remind everyone of the savings to be had by purchasing their Earlybird tickets this month. She added: “Our prices mean that families can enjoy a day out savouring all the excitement of the world’s largest military airshow this summer without breaking the bank.”

As well as celebrating its 40th anniversary, this summer’s Air Tattoo will host a gathering of specially-decorated ‘Tiger’ aircraft from the NATO Tiger Association. ‘Tiger’ aircraft come from NATO squadrons that have a Tiger or Big Cat in their emblem and their association marks its 50th anniversary in 2011. The ‘operational’ spotlight STAR 11 will focus on aircraft and equipment involved in the roles of Strike and Reconnaissance.

In addition to the day-specific Earlybird tickets, there is also an opportunity to buy tickets valid for either Saturday (July 16) or Sunday (July 17), two-day weekend tickets as well as tickets for all the various grandstands and enclosures.

Earlybirds looking to attend next summer’s Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in the Cotswolds can now save £5 on the cost of their general admission ticket.

The Earlybird tickets, which have just gone on sale, are only available until February 28, 2011, priced £34. After that date, tickets purchased for either Saturday, July 16 or Sunday, July 17 will cost £39.

Next summer’s Air Tattoo will look back over the past four decades as it celebrates its 40th anniversary with a series of special aerial displays and ground entertainment. It will also host a gathering of specially-decorated ‘Tiger’ aircraft from the NATO Tiger Association. ‘Tiger’ aircraft come from NATO squadrons that have a Tiger or Big Cat in their emblem and their association marks its 50th anniversary in 2011.

In addition to saving £5 on the cost of a ticket, Earlybirds will also have their £4 booking fee waived – representing even more value for money.

On friday evening Boeing 787 Dreamliner arrived in heavy rain at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands. Departure to Boeing Field Seatle Saturday around 17:00 Local time.

From  November 4-6, Boeing 787 made a marketing trip through western Europe with stops in Paris and Amsterdam. Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported that Schiphol Airport officials had confirmed that the twin jet was slated to visit the Netherlands on November 5.

At stake is an order for up to 100 aircraft for delivery starting in 2014 to replace the carrier’s older A340s and 747s. In May, KLM president Peter Hartman told Flightglobal the order had “stalled” because “the manufacturers are not willing to give us fixed dates and [aircraft] specifications.”

Boeing appears set to give Air France/KLM the certainty they are looking for with a 787 visit to each airline’s home base.

Program sources confirm that ZA006 ( N787ZA), the second of two General Electric GEnx-1B powered 787s, is slated to hit the road for the new jet’s third European swing.

Air France/KLM has always selected General Electric or SNECMA (or CFM) engines for its aircraft, putting the GEnx powered 787 at the top of the airline’s interest list for replacement, though the carriers said they would likely opt for a mix of the two.

With three years to go before A350′s entry into service, negotiations between Airbus and GE to have second engine option along side the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB have largely disappeared from public view. In May 2009, GE said that once ZA005 and ZA006 entered flight test, the engine-maker believed it had an opportunity to “restructure discussions” with Airbus around adding a second engine to the program.

GE had previously been comfortable with offering an engine for the A350-800 and -900, but was reluctant about developing a competing engine for the -1000, which is set to go head-to-head with the 777-300ER powered by the GE90-115B.

The last flying example of one of Britain’s most iconic historic aircraft, Avro Vulcan XH558 is once again facing a funding crisis which could lead to her being permanently grounded and the Nuneaton Based Air Cadets are urging air enthusiasts and members of the public to pledge their support in a bid to help to keep her flying.

Air Cadets from 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron recently had a visit from members of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, who came along to talk to them about the last flying example of one of Britain’s most recognisable historic aircraft Avro Vulcan XH558.

David Wilson and Ann Raske of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust described how after a career of 33 years of service, XH558, the Spirit of Great Britain, was the last Vulcan to fly with the RAF. Her final service flight was on 23rd March 1993 to Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome in Leicestershire. They then went on to detail the 14 years of work, which had gone into restoring her to an airworthy condition and how on the 18th October 2007, Vulcan XH558 roared into the air again. An unforgettable day for the Vulcan to the Sky team.

Unfortunately the Leicestershire based Vulcan to the Sky Trust who operate the Vulcan XH558 have suffered badly under the current financial climate, with some commercial sponsors withdrawing support. As a result the trust has until the end of October this year, to raise the £400,000 needed to keep her in the air otherwise the aircraft could be sold off to a private collector, possibly in Russia or the US, and may never fly again.

Flt Lt Paul Hincks of 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron said, “The financial situation will eventually improve but if XH558 stops flying now we will never see her back in the air again. Generations of young people have been inspired by the sight of the Vulcan’s unique delta wing shape and sound of its four mighty Olympus engines. Hopefully with the support of the public Vulcan XH558, Spirit of Great Britain, will continue honouring the past and inspiring future generations of air minded young people.

The NATO Tiger Meet is an annual event held in a different place each year during which flying squadrons that share a tiger or big cat emblem come together. This year´s edition of this large-scale international exercise takes place between 4 and 15 October at the Royal Netherlands Air Force air base of Volkel. RNLAF´s 313 Squadron, itself a “tiger unit”, is organising and hosting the event. What started in the 1960s as a primarily social gathering has developed over the years into a highly sophisticated training event. Through highly varied programmes, the exercising units keep their skills up to par and have the opportunity to exchange valuable experience.Â

Organisation

The NATO Tiger Association brings together units from all over the world that have a tiger or other big cat in their logos or emblems. The Tiger Meet is also intended by the association to strengthen the ties between its members. Although its name would lead one to suspect otherwise, the NATO Tiger Meet is not organised by NATO. NATO has included the event in its training schedule, however. Â

The NATO Tiger Meet is organised by a different tiger unit every year. This year, the honour has fallen to 313 F-16 Squadron of Volkel Air Base.Â

Organiser: 313 Squadron

313 Squadron, established in 1953 at Volkel Air Base, began its existence training new pilots for European navigation and weather conditions. After subsequent relocations to Woensdrecht Air Base and Twenthe Air Base, it eventually returned to Volkel in 2006 equipped with F-16s. Its training task had been transferred to 306 Squadron a few years earlier. At present, 313 Squadron is one of five operational F-16 squadrons of the Royal Netherlands Air Force.   Â
