RAF Leuchars Personnle participate in Middle East Exercise
RAF Leuchars personnel are to be tested in Exercise Magic Carpet, one of a series of annual exercises in Oman where RAF squadrons participate in combined exercises and bilateral training with the Royal Air Force of Oman.
Eighty personnel from Leuchars 125 Expeditionary Air Wing (this will be the first time an AEW will have supported an exercise of this size) will operate in a unique and demanding environment that will provide high quality tactical training in high ambient temperatures, posing an excellent challenge for all.
United Kingdom assets involved in Exercise Magic Carpet comprise one E3D, one VC10, 7 Tornado F3, 8 Tornado GR4, 4 Harrier operating from HMS Illustrious, Tactical Communications Support and Catering Support. Other support includes; USAF F16 aircraft and USN F 18 aircraft.
The overriding objective is to conduct a Combined and Joint exercise to prepare all participants for future operations; additionally the event will build on recent operations experience and provide valuable training opportunities for all participants.
The duration of the exercise is up to 3 weeks based at RAFO Thumrait located in the desert approximately 400 miles from Muscat.
