Airline industry still feels effects of Sept. 11

Five years ago, the Sept. 11 attacks dramatically shifted the fortunes of the aviation industry. Airlines faced a steep drop in revenue, forcing them to lay off thousands of workers and cut service. Security costs soared as the carriers and federal authorities took steps to prevent another attack.
